10 years ago I would have agreed with your friend. Back then, SQL Server offered DTS (Data Transformation Services) and it didn't compete with Informatica.

With the emergence of SSIS to replace DTS, Microsoft has committed to winning the ETL game.

Microsoft BI is becoming a huge player and is only getting bigger. MSBI is being used in Fortune 500 companies around the world. So I don't agree with your friend that "msbi is not sued in so many companies".

That being said, here is my suggestion.

Learn Microsoft BI, but put some of your focus on datawarehousing and Business Intelligence in general. Grab a book like http://www.amazon.com/Data-Warehouse-Lifecycle-Toolkit/dp/0470149779 and start reading up on the theory.

Once you know one ETL tool (SSIS in this case) you will be able to pick up the other tools pretty easy. The real knowledge is in the architecture. The book I referenced with help you get started with that.

You could try being a surgeon. That includes health and there is a lot of technology involved and I'm guessing that you have to use maths somewhere. I know that maths would be very useful for getting into medical school anyway. Otherwise I could suggest working as a scientist in a laboratory because that definitely involves all 3. You'll have to do a lot of work though. Good luck in whatever you decide to do!
