I called in sick once at around 2:30pm and I called in vacation time at noon. As a result, I am unreliable at work. The first time I was passed out and couldn't wake up on time, I was sick. The second time it happened I thought it was Saturday but it was Friday. I called when I realized. Now I am getting a warning. Am I justified in being angry? If I am sick, how can I call in sick on time? And the second time, it was stupid of me, but an honest mistake.

I am looking to leave this job.

If you have not been at this employer for very long, it may not look good now. But if you do not have any other occurances, there should be no problem. I agree that it is difficult to call in when you are sick, but if you value your job, you need to make an extra effort to make sure you follow basic workplace policies.

Some employers are just more strict than others. Of course, no employer wants to be notified at the last minute. This leaves them hanging, and depending on the work you do, it could really hurt them to not have you there. Even if you are sick, you should wake up for work on time and call. And you should not take a vacation day at the last second like that. Those days are usually requested off in advance. I don't think they are too out of line for writing you up. You should be responsible and notify them on time or in advance if you can't be there.

Yes, you were justified in receiving a warning. Your employer doesn't care whether you were sick, hung over, or thought it was the wrong day of the week. They just know that you aren't at work and no one has heard from you.

If you are truly ill, call in first thing in the morning, or leave a message the night before if voice mail is reliable. Fair warning that too many sick days, even if you are legitimately ill, can still result in a warning.

If you're not sick - don't call in. Working with a hangover may inspire you not to party too much on a work night.

And keeping a calendar at home might allow you to better keep track of the days of the week - there are only seven of them, it shouldn't be too difficult.

Good luck.

before you leave your current employer....

yes, you are expected to call in sick in a timely manner....this is true wherever you go (if you are due in at 9, 9:30 is the absolute latest you should wait to call out- some employers are more strict than that!)

and telling your supervisor that you aren't in because you thought it was Saturday, when in fact it was Friday WILL cause an employer to wonder about your capabilities...

vacation time is for planned time off (calling in at noon isn't planned)

and I know this may sound critical- I've learned this the hard way! I was written up too- for similar reasons...now I run the HR department for a large agency. (learned my lesson!)

Does your office have Voice mail? When you first became sick - even at 3:00 am you could have called and left a message. I understand you being angry - but you also have to understand the employers point of view. They are just covering their butts just in case this does happen more often with you and they can fire you with just cause.

If you really are sick, you need to see the doctor, and have them, give u a form showing you were there (you can have the form show why u where they or not, usually the dr will ask or it just has a part you tear off the bottom if you dont want your employer to know the reason why you were at the doctor.

If you turn that into your employer, they can NOT write you up for that! When your really sick, your sick and you have proof to show them if you go to the doctor.

Those would warrant write ups at any company I have ever worked for. Most companies expect a call in within 30 minutes of your report time to work -- or you get written up. Failure to do so shows lack of responsibility.

I have been sick. I have even placed in the hospital. I ALWAYS have called in as required to keep my job.

You should not be angry. Did you u read the terms and conditions before you signed the contract. You are very lucky to still have a position in the company. Best thing to do now is to work your hardest and keep a good personnel profile if u want to keep your job.

I grew up in Texas - got warnings and tickets. I paid them, no one ever found out.
