i'm applying for an airline, and i have 1 1/2 yrs. of actual customer service experience from retail, but i was wondering if i can count receptionist experience as customer service as well.

Yes, that counts, particularly in a busy office. One CEO told me his receptionist was "VP of First Impressions" and he was serious.
Don't feel you have to apologize for the job title (there's no need to--and I've worked as a receptionist) or make something up. Just note your duties and the kinds of people you dealt with, i.e., was this is a doctor's office? Law office? Factory?
Good luck.

It can. Some reception positions are very customer service oriented, others are more pick up the phone and transfer types of jobs. If your position requires you to actually listen, acknowledge, explore and respond to questions and concerns, even if that is as basic as "I understand the problem you are having and can get you to the right person in our accounting department" answers.
What you need to do is identify what qualities the airline is looking for in the role you are applying for, and match it to your experience. Taylor your resume and responses to those criteria and it will help them see the relevance of your background.
