Generally speaking, you should have a love of reading, good computer and research skills, good organizational skills, and a love of information.

In order to be an actual librarian, most states require that you have a Master's Degree in Library Science.

There is no one set of skills that will be applicable to all possible positions. In the library, as any other employer, the skills required differ for each position. Shelving books will require different skills than required for the acquisitions department. The person at the checkout desk has different skills than the back office personnel. Some positions, such as reference librarian, will require advanced degrees.

The library website should have a listing of open positions - check that out for open positions and the skills they are looking for in each case.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor librarians should have:

* A master’s degree in library science usually is required; special librarians may need an additional graduate or professional degree.

* A large number of retirements in the next decade is expected to result in many job openings for librarians to replace those who leave.

* Librarians increasingly use information technology to perform research, classify materials, and help students and library patrons seek information.

probably the skills they teach you in librarian college, which you need to go to for a degree in library science to get a job. I guess you could volunteer at the desk and shelve books, but that wont pay much i doubt you will advance.

There is a college course called "Library Studies". Rutgers even offers the class, you could even check it out on line. I guess there is more to libraries than just the Dewey Decimal system.

You should know about literature, the system the library uses to find what people are looking for, and most of all, a sincere desire to help people.

my suggestion would be to start out as a volunteer. that way you know what to expect when you become employed there and have the right skills for the job.
