Well I had a first interview with the employer yesterday at the retail shop and I thought things went really well. He asked questions about experience, was very friendly, good eye contact/body language, expressed interest in me as a person outside of work; we even knew a few people in common from my previous jobs and briefly talked about things unrelated to the job. Overall the interview felt like a conversation and lasted long enough to really sell myself. The weird part was that in the end as I was about to leave he gave me his business card and told me to contact him at the end of the week to keep in touch. I kind of forget the reason he said but I found it rather odd that he told me to contact him rather then he tell me a time I'd hear back from him. I then followed up a few hours later with a little thank you e mail only because I really did enjoy the interview and wanted him to know so. He immediately replied saying it was nice meeting me as well and that he looks forward to hearing from me at the end of the week. I'm just confused, is this normal? Is this just a nice way of letting me down/not dealing with flat out saying no? I guess I will do as he says and call at the end of the week but it's just rather odd. Keep in mind I personally sent out my resume via email, not through a job board or Craigslist so I wasn't even sure they were hiring. I sent it anyway just in case and he said someone from HR fwded it to him (he's the manager of the store) and he was interested... thoughts?

It is a rather strange thing to do. Perhaps they are deciding on applicants throughout the week and you're to ring up to see whether you're successful. Usually they let you know but sometimes you have to contact them.

companies try this consistently - they only ought to determine they have sufficient applicants to come to a decision between. Or, the business enterprise in all risk had the 'comparable' place open in yet another branch.....
