I know it was careless to do that but now I realize how dumb I am for putting it out like that. How do I know if my ssn is being used the wrong way? And should I contact the restaurant about how uncomfortable I am?

It's great that you're being careful about your ssn! However, it should be safe to put on your job applications. In fact, a lot of employers require it.

If you are uncomfortable with the restaurant having your ssn, you have the right to contact them about it and to ask them to remove it from their records.

From now on, you need to ask whether or not it is a requirement for the application. Keep in mind that if it is, and you refuse to put down your ssn, your application will most likely not be considered.

The best option is to give your ssn and other important personal information when you are further along in the hiring process.

If an application has a spot asking for your social security number and you don't give it then you will not be considered so there really no consideration to be made.

If there is not a place for your social security number then never provide it
