When you have a lot of work pressure. Even i would say the same thing which your boss has said. To work smarter you have to think ways to complete the work as soon as possible. Chalk out a plan before you start your work by putting a check list. By doing this you can prioritize the work which you have to deliver first. You can delegate the time for each work to complete it and strictly adhere to that. By this you will definitely see a change in your work.
As you have not mentioned your type of work i can give you an example :
If your working with Microsoft excel you can reduce your time by using short cut keys. Usage of keyboard without using mouse will also make your work faster.
Start thinking about the ways to work smarter than harder.

for me it means to work more efficient! If you are already at that point, then you must make sacrifices and work longer...shorter lunch period. If you are in a Union, ask your shop steward. Be the BEST you can be!
have fun!
