Question:
How can I improve my C.V?

Objective

My aim is to find full time permanent work that I enjoy and that will keep me very busy for the foreseeable future. I am looking for factory work or shop work as both of them I enjoy. I can work well in a team situation and can easily adapt to new challenges or situations. I work very hard and like to keep busy. I am a good time keeper and very reliable. I am also a confident person.

Experience

Warehouse Assistant

June 2006 - December 2006, Poundland, Wednesbury

My job was to receive deliveries and make sure all the paperwork was correct once this was done then I could start to unload the goods using a pallet truck. Once all the pallets were unloaded, I would strip them down and place all the goods onto the relevant cages for the sections in the shop, e.g., Beauty, Household and D.I.Y. Once all the pallets were stripped I had to place them by the door for collection. This would take about three to four hours to complete. We had deliveries four times a week. On the non delivery day I would help to keep the warehouse clean and tidy. Whilst working at Poundland I was taught how to use a bailing machine to get rid of the cardboard by putting it in the bailer and then shrink wrapping it onto a pallet. I also had to keep the shelves full in the shop when it was quiet in the warehouse.

Production Operative

January 2005 - January 2005, B.B.M. Ltd, Wolverhampton

My job was to feed bottles onto the track so that they could be filled, sometimes I would put lids onto the bottles or put labels on them. On occasions I would be packing bottles for dispatch. Sometimes I would help with putting the pallets onto the truck, someone would use the forklift to place them on the truck and I would place them using the pump truck.

Loader/Unloader

March 2004 - December 2004, C.R.V. Ltd, Wednesbury

My duties were to collect more than a thousand recycling boxes from residents- kerbside’s and sort through the materials and place them into the relevant cages which were on our van then return the box back to the kerbside. Once the cages were full, we would return to the depot where someone would remove the cages with a forklift truck. Once the cages had been emptied, we would go back out and finish the round off. Most days we would work 1-2 hours over because the rounds were long and there was a shortage of staff. Whilst working here I had to deliver some leaflets to let people know when we would be coming to collect their boxes and what kind of stuff could be placed in the box.

Stock Person September 2003 - December 2003, Littlewoods/Index, Moxley

My duties were to unload the containers by hand or pump truck, check the correct amount and make sure the codes matched up with the paperwork. I would then place the stock into the correct aisle for the checkers and pickers and complete all the paperwork which had to be returned to the main office. Also I had to go and ask the drivers to pull into the loading bays. Working for such a big company we had to stick to tight deadlines and ensure all products were not damaged. On occasions when deliveries were quiet I would have to go and help the checkers or pickers in the other warehouse. This job was shifts.

General Labourer

August 2002 - August 2003, Hi-Tec Fasteners Ltd, Bilston

I had to put two plates together that held more than one hundred screws in each side and then fasten them tightly with bolts using a spanner and ratchet. There were about one hundred and eight plates to be put together. When I had put these plates together, they would be ready to be sent for heat treatment. Once they came back from heat treatment I would have to dismantle them and tip the screws into a metal container to be cleaned and packed. The whole process took three days to complete. When I wasn’t assembling the plates, I would be using a machine that put washers onto the screws and then I would have to pack them at the same time using weighing equipment. I sometimes helped with the deliveries to the home workers as well.

Playgroup Assistant

January 2001 - July 2002, Little Daisy Bank Playgroup, Bilston

I would help prepare activities for the children aged between two and five years old such as painting, drawing and jigsaws. I would also help prepare for the children-s break where they would have

"Production Operative" ... January 2005 - January 2005 = end date can't be right (I assume May 2006 ???) ...

6 jobs in 5 years is not impressive .... obvious question is why did you leave ? and what you have been doing since Dec 2006 ?

One possible approach is :-

"Having worked the past few years as a short term Temporary Contract worker (filling in for Maternity leaves and illness etc.) I am now looking for a more permanent position. Although recent posts have been short term, in the recent past I have gained significant factory and shop work experience (see below)."

I'll see if I can give some advice for each section. I am taking out things like dates, just to make it easier to write here, but you keep them in:

Warehouse Assistant

Try to make it bullet points (a bit shorter) such as

"Duties included the following:-

- Receiving the deliveries, and confirming that the delivered goods matched the delivery notes.

- Organising the deliveries for distribution around the shop

- Maintaining a safe and tidy warehouse

- Managing the waste within the warehouse

- Assisting with stocking the shop during quiet periods in the warehouse

I was trained and I am competent to use the pallet truck and Bailing machine"

Something like that. I have taken out the bit about the deliveries taking 4 hours, for 4 days a week (an employer will add that up to 16 hours a week - so what did you do for the other 21 hours to make up a 37 hour week? Could look bad)

Production Operative

"sometimes I would put lids onto the bottles or put labels on them"... Makes it sound like you did this only when you were bothered, though I guess you were moved to different parts of the plant

Maybe something like this

"My main duties were to feed bottles onto the track so they could be filled. I was trained how to operate the rest of the production line and was willing to use other parts of the machinery as required"

Wonder if these might give you a couple of thoughts? I might be wrong of course, and you should read all the other answers on here.

One thing you could put in to each section, or add a section at the end is your skills that you have. I mentioned that you are trained to drive the pallet truck in the warehouse job - do something similar for other skills that you have. Include things like any first aid training that you have, driving licenses, computer literacy - any skills that an employer might want. Have you had any chance to lead a team or even 1 other employee - that is a good one ot put in.

Hope that might help a bit

If you were looking to employ someone what is the first thing YOU would want to know? when you are competing with lots of other Candidates what will make you stand out - Your C.V. is a tool to get you in front of the company and that is what we have to do,when I read about you I can see your passion for music I am not convinced you want a job,if you really want to earn money convince me!!!!! so:- Name and contact details No date of birth ( your experience will date you) Introduction- look at the job role advertised decide on the type of person they want then highlight your relevant qualities in this intro i.e. Health Club Ast Manager required, must be qualified and have excellent people skills,, experience not essential as training will be given Your intro would be An experienced Fitness Instructor who is looking for a position where customer service is appreciated, where the ability to learn new tasks is expected to maintain a professional image and hard work produces results You need to complete in you own words but write this intro in the third person as ''I did this and I can do that'' sounds a bit like bragging and not appealing. So think about your skills and qualities and list in an interesting way as if a friend was telling somebody about you, listing skills in bullet point fashion does not sound as good The intro gets the attention so now tell them your work experience I would be thinking at this point that I like the sound of you but can you do the work:- so Nov 2006 to Now Company X Job Title List responsibilities Achievements List 1 thing you did well do not waffle Oct 2005 to Nov 2006 Company Y Job Title Responsibilities List what you did Achievements List 1 thing you did that you are proud of keep it simple do not waffle At this point an employer has made decision to put you on the KEEP pile or in the bin so the next bits are for reference or to support what has gone before Education List last school and Quals achieved Further Education List quals achieved do not bother with college unless it is well known i.e. Oxford Interests list no more than 3 do not explain i.e. Reading- Keep fit -Music ( this is something to be talked about at interview , if the interviewer mentions they went to a concert last night then you can bring up your interest in music and your personality will come out , on paper it never does the max number of pages is 2- no Photos not fancy font no colours, text size readable not too large or small and ask some one to critique it when it is finished and ask them to be brutally honest - YOU WANT THIS TOOL to GET YOU A JOB WILL IT?????!!!!! References Available on request ( if you get the job that's the time the company will need this)
