If you had to call someone to let them know that they didn't get a job, what would be a good phrase to use? It seems like the kind of information you want to introduce quickly in the conversation.

Don't be rude or harsh. Don't suggest that someone was more qualified. Just tell them "I wanted to personally call you to let you know that we have decided to fill the position with another candidate."

If they then ask about the reason, you can at that time offer that the other candidate's experience and qualifications more appropriately fit the needs of the company.

I would want that news delivered to me directly. Like such.

Me: Hello?

Possible Job: Is this Mr. ********

Me:Yeah.

PJ: I regret to inform you that you didn't get the job at *******

Me: Oh. :(

PJ: We found somebody with better qualifications. But we will keep your application on file for future refrence.

Me:Thanks, I guess.

I would just tell them they didn't get it and why. I would waste time beating around the bush with phrases.

Good luck. I hope this helps, even though there are no phrases.

Here's the usual:

"While we feel that your qualifications are exemplary, we have decided that at this time we are going to continue to pursue other candidates. We will, however keep your information on file, and should a job become available that matches your qualifications in the future, you will be contacted at that time."

(this also works well with breaking up with someone)

That a more qualified applicant was hired to fill the position. You want to word it so that you emphasize that someone else was more qualified and not that something was wrong with the person you are turning down. You don't want a any discrimination charges brought against you or your company.

Just be like :

"Hey u know what, we found someone better than you. With your qualifications and experience I'm pretty sure you can find a job at McDonald's or Wal-Mart"

There u go.

Thank you for coming in today, however, at this time we feel you are not the right person for the job.
