While, I agree with the above posts, I would say that relative to the crowd that lurks here, having a lawyer would prevent one from needing to ask for legal advice from unknown people at Yahoo Answers, and potentially getting some really bad advice.

When looking for a lawyer, find one before you actually need one. We have had a family attorney for years. If something comes up, you can pick up the phone and get sound advice. Our attorney has sat beside us during deaths, home purchases, financial investments, business dealings, etc.

Someone has to know the rules that we all live by. Check out the various areas of law Findlaw and you can get a good idea of the variety of issues that lawyers might work on. People unfamiliar with the law often think that all lawyers do is court work. Most lawyers are not litigators. Many never step foot in a courtroom. Consider that someone has to be an expert of maritime law, the rules and regulations of the sea. Others need to be experts in Indian law, the laws that regulate Native American issues. There are hundreds of specialties. If you can think of an area of the business world that interests you chances are that a group of attorneys specialize in that area and spend all day long working on the issues specific to that niche.

Lawyers learn the law in order to work the legal system for the benefit of their clients. A good lawyer can act as an advisor, advocate, defender, and litigator for his client. For example, if you own a business, it is important to have legal counsel in order to understand what liabilities your business might run into and whether or not you are operating legally as regards licensure, labor/employment law, taxes, etc. An attorneys, or specialist attorneys can help you do that.

Lawyers are most often called upon when it is too late and something needs to be fixed. A person is being sued or has suffered damages due to the negligence or malfeasance of another. The attorney uses his knowledge of applicable law and procedure to win a favorable outcome from a court of law. There are general practice attorneys and attorneys who specialize in torts, corporate law, tax law, criminal law, family law, etc.

Most concisely stated, a lawyer is usually someone you never want to meet until you need him, but probably should in order not to need him!

Lawyers have an intimate understanding of the law. They do all sorts of things. They can draft a bank loan or defend you in court.
