Question:
Have i been blacklisted from seemingly every job?
2019-02-05 14:34:48 UTC
Had been dismissed from a job around 5 months ago and have been looking for work. CV is up-to-date and recruitment agencies seem to be coming at me left, right and center. However, once I ve been registered or have been to such interviews, i never ever hear back from these agencies.

Is there a blacklist that exists as it seems once they have dug a little further into who i really am, they want nothing to do with me.

Why were you fired? If it was theft you will have problems..There is no "blacklist" but if they call previous employer & find out something negative that could be the problem.

'Blacklisting' someone is illegal.

However, depending on the reason you were dismissed, when the people in Human Resources call the references on your resume - CV- the people who let you go could be telling them things that actually happened, but you do not want the new boss to find out.

So, If you were dismissed because they were closing a department or business was slow...that is not a red flag...but if you were dismissed because a supervisor observed that you did not do your work, or were constantly late, or that other employees complained about you...and that person is where your references are directed...they are telling the people who call..exactly why you were let go.

It may be a good move to call that person and tell them that you are desperately looking for work, and that every time they say something bad about you, they prevent you from being hired. Send them a $10 gift card for something.

FINALLY the recruiters......

:::SIGH:::

The recruitment agencies are just that. They are looking for 'warm bodies' that have 'qualifications' that match one or more qualifications of a business that is hiring. The recruiters are generally 3rd parties who scan the want ads for companies that are hiring and then scan Monster, Indeed, Craig's List and other places where people post resumes for resumes of people whose qualifications somewhat match jobs.

The call you in and they interview you and they tell you how great you are, how wonderful your qualifications are and how they have several jobs that are JUST PERFECT for you. And then they never call back.

Why?

Because on the other end there are companies like mine. We need people - so we advertise on Monster, Indeed and other places. We also scan those websites for resumes of people who EXACTLY match the qualifications advertised. We call those people in and interview them and probably hire one or two.

In the mean time, after I have put up the ad and while I am interviewing people, the recruiter is reading the ads, and contacting you.

99.9% of the time, by the time a recruiter sees the ad, calls us and makes their spiel and gets us to agree to pay them a fee for referring a good candidate...we have already hired someone. And if we have not, unless the recruiter is VERY VERY good at what they are doing... the people they are referring ...those people seldom have more then 3 of the qualifications we are looking for.

In all honesty...in the past 5 years we have hired.....about 150 people....and only 2 of those people came to us through a recruiter.

You would serve yourself better if YOU were the one contacting potential employers and just forget about going through recruiters. IMHO...they are hurting your chances more than helping them...unless you are in a VERY SPECIALIZED, HIGH SECURITY FIELD.

I am guessing you don't interview as well as you think you do...

There are no lists shared between employers of blacklisted people; its illegal and a disgruntled employee would eventually spill the beans...

Speak with your contacts at these agencies and ask this same question...just leave out the blacklist part.

+1 for the comment about blacklists being illegal. Now, you need to figure out why you're not getting hired.

If you're not getting interviews then you either need to improve your resume or your application procedure (apply for different jobs, apply for jobs in different locations, etc.).

If however you're getting interviews but not getting offers, then you either need to work on your interviewing skills (interviewing is a skill that can be improved with practice), you are asking for too much money., or your resume is is a little too embellished and you don't really have quite the experience that they thought you had.

Once you figure out what problem you are facing, that will better equip you to deal with it.

On a side note, employers will often screen peoples social media accounts to find out more about them. So, go clean up your facebook, instagram, and linked in accounts and remove anything that a stuffy old hr person might disqualify you for. At least until you get the job you want.

Blacklisted? No.

But if you have poor references or no references, obviously that will make you less desirable.

blacklists do exist

but also you could just be paranoid

what did you do, that you think would get you on a blacklist?

what industry are you in.

[edit]

to all those saying blacklists are illegal - well, duh

yes, it is illegal to formally operate a blacklist of employees

if you think that means it don't happen, then you are living in cloud cuckoo land

Blacklists are illegal in the U.K. and there are no lists somewhere of peoples names.

Agencies will wait for you to contact them over the results of interviews, sounds like you have just sat there and not followed it up.

They will also tell you why you have been unsuccessful.

So start phoning.

A "blacklist" would be illegal. Check back with one or two of the agencies and ask them to explain why they didn't get you any work.
