Send your resume and cover letter and see what happens. Many companies are not taking on interns due to the economic downturn but it doesn't hurt to try.

Make no mistake, internship is not a part-time job, that means you are not employed by the company. You still have to fulfill your commitment as agreed upon while you applied for the internship but you get NO PAY. Working in the IT department does not perceive you are taking any part in their project because a lot of things you will not be doing and they don't want you to know anyways. For one thing, there is an advantage, you are being assessed by your boss and there might be some job opportunities for you after graduation.

I think you have a good shot at getting an internship. My mom's friend's daughter got one at IBM. However, I think you have a 80-100% chance of getting one elsewhere. You have good experience so far that is better than most students. There are entry level and internships everywhere. It's a great idea to get one in the medical field since it's more stable and probably more likely to pay more. During April and May, I keep an huge eye open for internships through the web, school, and career fails. I'm sure they will come up.
