Question:
Boss delaying performance evaluation, getting worried?

I've been at my job, a medium-sized company, for just over 8 months. The policy is that we stay in "probation" mode until our six-month evaluation, after which we earn full-time status. My office mate started about two weeks before I did, and neither of us have had our evaluations. We work in a department of 7 people with one manager.

We asked our manager about it in late December, and he said they'd happen on December 30 or January 2. That date came and went, and he continued to reschedule the evaluations as projects and other things got in the way.

My office mate's apartment lease is expiring in a few months, and he and his wife are looking into buying a house. They had a baby in November and need to upgrade their living space and get a more permanent residence. Rightfully, he's concerned about making that decision before his official performance evaluation. We've had little or no feedback about our job performance in the last 8 months.

Today, my office mate decided to talk to the boss in private about the evaluations and tell him about his upcoming financial decision. He didn't get a straight answer and was just told the evaluations would be next week (we've heard that before).

We both think we are doing a good job, but we're actually wondering if he's prolonging an imminent layoff or if he's just flighty. Everyone is paranoid about their jobs nowadays, and it seems odd that he wouldn't offer some peace of mind when it's obvious we need it.

Is it even kosher to tell your boss about upcoming financial decisions in order to get reassurance or information about your job security?

Something is wrong somewhere. I wouldn't discuss financial problems or decisions with him .This gives him one up on you. He's not interested in your private affairs..Since you work in a small dept. in a medium sized company , his stalling would cause me concern..I don't want to sound negative but with our economy the way it is and getting worse , sounds like management is making a decision.. I wish you well but this is one that concerns me..Prepare for the worst and hope for the best.. Good luck

I would go to your boss, sit down with him and tell him your situation. Tell him you are counting on this evaluation to keep your stability. If he has a family/ house/ bills, he should understand your position. It sounds like he is lazy and doesn't want to complete these evaluations. Or, with the economy how it is, it might just be hard to promote part-time workers to full-time since that would increase the company's budget...I wouldn't worry about being laid off, because if you ARE doing your job and doing it well, you should be fine, you might just work part-time longer than you expected to. When people in your office start getting laid off, then I would take it into consideration. Ask someone else in your office how long their evaluations took, and there is a good possibility your boss is just a procrastinator.

Good LUCK!
