I awoke alone, and in a daze my head on an empty table in an empty room, except for furniture., not having one clue where I was or how I got there. . Not knowing to anyone else but 'God himself, but on the way off of the elevator, , I had just tripped and banged my head pretty badly, yet no blood showed, I was pretty out of it, and how I managed to walk into

the room or the reason why I was doing so was a blank what I was doing in a .conference room, I had no idea.

I vaguely remember people talking, asking question, showing all kinds of

spread sheets, etc. then all went black When I awake the . the door

was locked. I did not have the key and had to spend the night sleeping

on the very unconfortable table or the floorr/

the next morning everything was explained,

I was a very important woman in the company and was to talk and esxplain many new ideas. I was only there about fifteen minutes when I blanlked out. Everyone thinking the worst took me for drunk or druggerd. "they should have known better and gotten mt to a doctor.

I only had a slight concussion, and everything is 'A no.1 at my companyy. But it is something I will never forgot. I taught me a great lesson, no matter weird things seam, do no judge. I have lived my live

LIKE THIS EVER SINCE.GOD BLESS YOU AND ALL A PLEASE REMEMBER DO NO JUDGE. CM

Yes and no. Yes I've fallen asleep at boring, droning, fakeo corporate meetings of zero importance like 90% of them are. No, if it is the 10% real corporate staff meeting of importance, like where I may have to 'do something', speak or give a report, I stay awake.

What happens?......

When I do fall asleep (90% of the time), I excuse myself to go to the bathroom and never come back.

I stay in the men's room (almost always an attendant) we read the newspaper, maybe play checkers, or I just sleep. If it's close enough I just go home. Out of town...hotel.

When the brain dead corporate morons finally wear themselves out and wrap up their 'meeting' a sympathetic person (mens room attendant, hotel maid, relative, secretary) wakes me up. I show up fresh as a daisy for the 'closing ceremony' of fake back patting and handshaking and the corporate morons don't even know I was never there.

This is a stupid question. But what do you expect from anyone (anything) as lame as Yahoo? They assume that everyone works an office job and goes to meetings on a regular basis. Other people get criticized for stereotyping but I guess the hipsters on the "Yahoo Team" are immune.

The answer is no. I don't have an office job. I run my own company (Capitalism! Gasp!) Any time I go to a meeting, it is with customers, or potential customers and falling asleep would be an incredibly stupid and irresponsible thing to do. Needless to say, the customers at the meeting would soon be ex-customers.

I worked for a small company, we had meeting every few months. We had the software team, the hardware team, and the mechanical team all meet up. I remember this summer, we had a meeting and paid for a huge hotel room, the meeting was from 7a.m to 7pm, no breaks whatsoever. So yes, I did fall asleep, three times. It s very hard to sit in a chair that long, your body is not moving around, and fall asleep, its the bodies natural tendency if your sitting still for too long. Sure I tried getting up and wringing out my arms and walking around, to no effect. Coffee does help on mental alertness, but still, the body sitting still at meetings is grueling. 12 hours!! I noticed around the room people were just zoning out. I was the youngest, so, I know it s not an excuse, but I m a night owl, always have been.

Yes once.I was working as an officer in flood victim areas.I could not have any sleep within 41 hours for taking effective measures to save people still alive. When an emergency call made me to move Head Quarter to attend a meeting where I was to put forward my demands with logic. In the meeting when my turn was over and some one from different area was narrating his position I felt sleepy.I was in sleep for about 25 minutes--as I was told later. As woke up I apologized to the presence and the chairperson said,"We found you asleep but did not disturb only because these few minutes sleep may help you feel better,"

I've fallen at asleep at a religious meeting and even though I was interested in it I couldn't help but close my eyes a bit. I felt so bad for the speaker, he saw me nodding off and laying my head down on my lap, yet he didn't say anything. Sometimes it's so hard to stay awake, it's almost impossible for me, even dozing off for 30 seconds and jerking back awake barely helps.

I know school doesn't count as a meeting, but I've fallen asleep in high school countless times. I always did well in the classes either way, surprisingly.

And I must say, these meeting stories are really interesting.

I've done so for the full gamut of reasons - sometimes cause I'm exhausted, others because I'm not materially part of the decision, others times because of something else altogether like my mind is on something else.

The result - never anything more than in a court room - being fined for contempt of court having nodded off after three hours of testimony which had no bearing on my testimony which was the truth. Needless to sa the jury believed the three hours of falsehood as opposed to my 5 minutes of truth. The truth then appearing a bit odd against the back drop of the legalism employed. This lawyer had falsehood portrayed as legitimate. Bringing in so called expert witnesses to say that the boat hull was in need of repair when only a hatch cover was loose. But to hear this guy talk - he spoke of rot and material replacement regarding the hatch as though representative that it be entirely structurally unfit due to a 24" x 24" hatch needing routine repair . This with him never actually seeing the boat. I knew of course the truth. Only a hatch needed repair and to prove it - I mention the storms she weathered and safely brought all home . This of course only enraged the barrister and said se how he hags the subject absurdly indicating that to weather a tromp is a true test of the hull. I know that hull can withstand anything this world can throw at it Been thru almost the worst including run aground at 120MPH winds and then to push off next morning. No problem with this hull design or material. Not so with many others leaking from just having set in displacement. Never the less a case can be made by many witnesses attesting to one thing after another needing repair. As would be the case in a vessel her age. Yet truth be known she has a great hull and running gear mostly because of its design and build. .

Yes. There was a big regional meeting for the fast food chain I used to work for. The suit from corporate office was a real windbag. He talked for at least an hour and a half (so I later found out). I dozed off after the first ten minutes of droning.

Fortunately for me, I was sitting near the back of the rather larger conference room and my nap went unnoticed. My co-workers told me that I hadn't missed anything. All of the pertinent information had been given out during the ten minutes I was awake. The rest was pointless filler and talking in circles.

I never have fallen asleep at an important meeting but I did a few times at normal meetings. 1 of those meetings, I was immediately called into my boss' office. He was furious & called all kind of names for seeing me fallen asleep (even though it was short, not extensive). I admitted to him I was tired due to long-working hours at the office but he didn't budge. He said "perception is everything. You could be the hardest worker in the planet but that will change quickly if ppl saw you fallen asleep. It showed you had no respect for colleagues". Years have gone since & I never forget what he said. I left his company long ago & he is still there. I am not 100% agreeing with him because I have seen numerous times when I hosted important meetings & ppl fell asleep or checking text messages, browsing internet on smart phones. To me, they are equally disrespectful & I gave them free passes. I would handle differently if I need their attention by simply ask like: "David, what do you think about ...". I guarantee he/she will wake up but don't ask like: "David/ Michelle, do you want some fresh air, coffee...?". That's equally insulting & disrespectful.

No, but I've fallen asleep at church and that was embarrassing.

Obviously I did everything I could from rubbing my hands, getting frequent sips of water at the fountain... to downing a whole tin of Altoids (as it were) to stay awake, but that didn't always work and it was so embarrassing.

This question makes me think of a part on 13 Hours where the contractor falls asleep when the US diplomat is giving a speech... and the CIA lead dude threatens to send him back home after one more mistake.

I wouldn't say the meeting was important, it was an AA meeting. I fell asleep and started snoring loudly, like Darth Vader mixed with a chainsaw loud. The secretary had to stop the meeting and wake me up because I was interrupting the whole meeting. It was pretty embarrassing.

I was in a "town hall meeting" where there were about 50 people listening to a director at my company making a presentation. I don't think I totally zonked out but I was closing my eyes, holding my head down, etc., The next day my manager called me into his office and gave me a lecture. He started the conversation by asking if I was narcoleptic. I wasn't getting much sleep at the time. Didn't get fired, but got a scolding. I started getting a full nights sleep after that.

I fell asleep once and when I woke up, I found myself elected to the Church Council. I was only about 25 at the time and they thought that I would be a rubber stamp for some planned shenanigans in church politics.

The problem was, I had gone to parochial school as a kid and to a church college for 2 years and knew enough about the principles, history and doctrine of the church to block them at almost every edict that they wanted to pass.

After about 40 years, I have never been asked to be a board or committee member in church government again.

I never fell asleep in a meeting ever, not even a safety meeting. I have gotten up and walked out a couple times. I was not alone either time, the first time it was a manager on their way out. They basically ranted about how it was our fault, I was forth that time, and more followed us. The other time, our foreman called a meeting to tell us we were wasting time, and he was making no valid points, I said this meeting is a waste of time, and went to my work station and started working. I was given a day off without pay for that. I was also welcomed back by my coworkers with smiles and handshakes. Sometimes, you have to call stupid stupid, even if it costs you.

I've had a life-long struggle with food comas, especially after lunch. In the Marine Corps, during MOS school, the class commander would quite often wake me up in the rudest manner possible. This always resulted in the whole unit losing instruction time as we fell out to PT because I couldn't stay awake. Because of me, my unit got twice the PT time as others and we ended up taking first place in the USO Challenge Races. It was Accounting School, so that really embarrassed all the grungier units.

I had an interview that the employer insisted upon being at 5 in the morning, in a town that was 2 hours away from me. I had asked to reschedule, because I was working til 2 in the morning at my current job. He insisted and I showed up, half awake and fell asleep continuously throughout the interview. Needless to say, he never offered me the job. Never thought I could be so tired that I would fall asleep during an interview; however, it does happen.

Yeahhhhhhh......I was working my way thru college, with an all night job..........working 11 pm to 7 am and then had an 8 am Philosophy class. I had to go straight from work , to college........and then would grab a seat in the back of the room.....and 9 times out of 10 , would promptly pass out. Once or twice I had to be nudged awake, because of loud snoring.........and one time, they decided to just leave me there, and let me sleep, since I was obviously quite tired. I woke up in the middle of the next class.

finally, one day............after the entire class filed out again..............the professor came over and nudged me awake, and wanted to know why I bothered showing up at all.

So I sheepishly explained the situation and apologized of course and admitted 8 am was a little early in the morning to be discussing Plato.....and she actually agreed with me....not too happy about her time slot either, I guess.

It turned out........the final exam......was only one essay question........"What was Plato's idea of a Happy man?"

Ohhhh Jeeeeezzzzzzz----------I didn't have a clue, so instead I wrote this wonderful essay on what *I* thought a happy man was.........

well, I got a big fat zero on the exam, of course..........but she wrote in the margain that the paper was hilarious and one of the funniest things she ever read............and clearly, creative writing was my calling, and to forget all the Aristotle nonsense!

She was a good sport about it all and very cool.........and eventually gave me a D for the course , anyway, just so I would at least get the credit for showing up and wouldn't have to repeat the class. -----which I thought was extremely generous and very kind of her do! The only "D" I got in college!

and I often like to say, a well deserved "D" .

Yes. I m an accountant and I was in a meeting with the executives of the firm. But, this meeting took place two weeks after the birth of my first son. So basically, I m a worn out, first-time father functioning on maybe a couple hour of sleep every night. One of the execs calls my name as I m blacking out and I pitched up and drank some water.

Two minutes later, I m passed out on the table and they re having a grand old time laughing at me. Shortly after, they called my wife to come for me and sent me home for the rest of the day.

happens all the time and it happens to everyone, at least now and then: falling asleep in inappropriate places or at inopportune times. If you're with friends, it can be funny. But sleeping in a meeting or in the middle of an important lecture can be mortifying.

The problem is more widespread than you might imagine. A 2009 survey conducted by state health departments in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that nearly 40 percent of U.S. adults fall asleep unintentionally during the day. In fact, the CDC describes the lack of sleep among modern Americans as a public health epidemic.

“When you fall asleep in any situation you don’t want to, it’s a sure sign that you’re significantly sleep-deprived,” said Ilene Rosen, MD, program director for the University of Pennsylvania Sleep Fellowship.

More problematically, nodding off outside the bedroom could be a sign of a serious sleep disorder, such as sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, or narcolepsy, said Sterling Malish, MD, director of the Good Samaritan Hospital Comprehensive Sleep Center in Los Angeles. If you suspect you have a sleep disorder, see a doctor. Falling asleep inappropriately could have serious consequences — for instance, if it happens when you’re behind the wheel. And if you're chronically sleep-deprived, you're also more susceptible to chronic conditions, including high blood pressure, diabetes, depression, cancer, and obesity.

Most adults need seven to nine hours of quality sleep every night, said M. Safwan Badr, MD, president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

RELATED: How I Solved My Insomnia by Getting Less Sleep

“Sleep is like the federal budget,” Dr. Badr said. “It’s a debt that has to be paid. And the interest is your health.”

What Makes People Fall Asleep Easily

You’re warm and you’ve just eaten. “A high temperature and a full belly are stimuli that make you relaxed,” setting the stage for falling asleep, Badr said.

You’re overloaded. If you have too much to do, you may not be making enough time for sleep. It’s better to scale back and do a few things well than be chronically sleep deprived.

You’re in a moving car or train. Think how easily babies fall asleep in cars. Adults often respond the same way, said Dr. Rosen. Research published in the journal Current Biology in 2011 found that men who took naps in a bed that rocked fell asleep faster than those who were in a stationary bed — the swaying motion promotes brain wave patterns that foster sleep.

How Not to Nod Off

Go to bed earlier. It’s better to go to bed earlier than to sleep later. That's because the hormones that regulate sleep are highest between midnight and 7 a.m. Also, it’s lighter in the morning, signaling your body to wake up. Dr. Malish suggested moving your bedtime up in 15-minute increments.

Stand up. “If you’re falling asleep on trains or the bus or in a lecture hall, get up and go to the back where you can stand,” advised Rosen. It’s harder to fall asleep while standing.

Take a nap. A 20-minute power nap can help you stay awake during the day. Just don’t take a nap too late in the day because it will disrupt your nighttime sleep and set you back to being sleep-deprived.

Drink some caffeine. Just remember that it can take eight hours for the caffeine to wear off, so you could be lying awake in bed at night. Also remember that too much caffeine can have its own side effects, such as anxiety and a fast heartbeat.

I fell asleep during a mandatory parenting class for divorcing couples. I was working hard, taking care of the children without the help of my soon to be ex, and had had no sleep the night before. I fell right out of my chair. I was afraid they'd force me to postpone the divorce, but everyone pretended not to notice. It was a large group, and I wasn't at the front.

The closest thing I came to that situation was when I was in the military and was in a classroom in which something like map reading was being discussed ( I don't exactly remember) and the previous day I and all the recruits had been put through a lot of exercise and everyone was tired but anyone who nodded off would be made to get up off his or her seat and go in back of the class and do dozens of pushups or knee bends or sit ups.

I was one of the people who nodded off and was put to do lots of all three.

Once and only once I was dozing off in the front row of a very important management business meeting, and the speaker could notice me, and I knew she could, so I got up and walked out the front door. I got a cup of coffee and entered the room again, through the back door, and I remained "standing and listening" in the back of the room drinking my coffee. This way I made a half way decent recovery of an unfortunate sleepy body and mind.

No. I have difficulties falling asleep normally, if I don't make a serious effort to fall asleep I probably would stay awake for days, it would be impossible for me to fall asleep during these type of situations just because I got bored.

If it had ever happened I probably would have gotten fired.

@STEVEN F

Does your pointless blabbering have any meaning? I assure you that I haven't ever fallen asleep anywhere outside of my bed without knowing. Also what myth are you talking about? "I probably would stay awake for days"? It's a hyperbole, a figure of speech, were you also "routinely" "without knowing" sleeping during English class to believe that everyone "routinely" falls asleep all the time without intending to sleep?

You don't know how amusing I find it that you are disagreeing with facts about my own life. Should I also go to your answer and make a pointless comment like:

"I BET you were unknowingly dreaming at that moment, that whole situation wasn't real and your former coworker was merely an illusion"?

I was in a meeting after intense exercise in the civil air patrol. Then we had this meeting where someone did a presentation. They taught how to land a plane properly. I sometimes close my eyes to concentrate on the voices. Some folks think I fall asleep but I keep responding to questions and offering suggestions.

When I actually do doze off my body gives off a burst of body heat. I have no idea way but my wife jokes about it. One time I dozed off I gave off that burst of heat and the person next to me jumped and shouted. Of course that woke me up, chuckle. "Now you know how to tell the difference when I'm concentrating on voices and when I doze off". The meeting went on like nothing happened.

Oh, that is nothing. Listen, I used to fall asleep on the fast lane on the freeway on the way home from work, and I would be dreaming. Sometimes, people thought that I was trying to cause phony accidents because sleep was slowing down the car. They would get mad, and get in front of me and brake because they were mad.

I was in a meeting at my university council and the discussion went on and on and on and it was all around some minor topic, so I dozed off, and when I awoke, I thought I had just gotten out of bed, stood up, took my bag, and walked away. People later asked me, "why did you walk off?" and I couldn't remember I had even been there.

They gave me the written protocols of that meeting, and it was just as boring as I assumed, so I didn't miss anything.

Yes, it was way back in 2004, I was working at a grocery store. I found out the managers did not have the best interest at work and went behind my back and helped a lot of people they shouldn't that are affecting my life today. Best advice, make sure you get your own food and drink, do not brag about dreams and ambitions (think the novel "Mice and Men", "Karma Girl" and "Pop Princess" for women, be weary of those kinds of people at all jobs in every industry.), and learn to be assertive and make sure to get out when your not working and don't let people bully or harass you out of a community event ever.

I fell asleep in an important meeting and wound up volunteering to lead our office in Tulsa.

Years ago I got moved to a line position in a bank and was invited to a lot of meetings of which I was supposed to participate. It was not because of the speakers that I was bored or anything because this job was my thing, my interest, my life and I enjoyed it but I found out it was the fluorescent cailing lights that had that blinking effect that would put me to sleep. It was like one of those sleep tapes that play a humdrum type music same as repetition in any music converts you, same as the soothing psychiatrist's words to put you to sleep. Not only did the fluorescent lights have the blinking but also the noise (yes there's noise to those of us who can hear it) but they affect the psyche. I used to sit there doing everything in my power to stay awake, blinking, reading, moving around in my seat, getting up for a drink of water, anything I could think of. The lights affected my my eyes so much that I would get dizzy and thought my body was going into circles and to the point where I felt I was going to faint. Finally they stopped asking me to meetings, so then I looked for another job where I could get out of the office and among people instead. Many years later when I had cataracts, when one eye was operated on but the other one not yet, I was so dizzy I couldn't stand up, and it was starting to or feeling like it was affecting the brain. It was like being in a plane not knowing which was up and which was down. A super weird feeling so much so that I could only get a few words out of my mouth when I called my doctor. The opthalmologist told me that light plays a very important part in seeing and feeling and in your balance. When seeing with one eye a lot of light and the other with a different shade of light that can affect your abilities and well being and you get dizzy and can't stand up. So fluorescent lights were doing that to me in meetings, flashing on and off and playing with my brain. So tell the questioner to get their eyes checked.

I had been informed on the why of the meeting & what it was for. I came in on the red eye special. Got picked up at the airport. Took to the meeting & fell asleep. Shawn woke me up when it was over. Ask what I thought. So I told him. He just looked at me & shook his head. Turned around & walked to the door. at the door he stopped. Turned back around. Looked at me. Then said I think you have the answer.

The CFO was giving a monotone, droning presentation of last quarter's figures, and I didn't realize I went to sleep until he finished and the president (who I worked for!) said, "I see that put some of you to sleep..." and he looked right at me! I thought I was so busted, but he looked around at other people, too, including the sales VP, who even exaggerated stretching and yawning. Phew, that was close!

What would help you is mental stimulation: think of all the millions of people who would gladly have your job and think of yourself being perceived as someone you don't want to be perceived as because what people can see is what they will know about you. If they see that you are disinterested, they will be like "meh".
