If I initially agree to work on a temp basis for 17 weeks, can I choose to terminate my contract earlier if a better opportunity arises?

If you signed a contract for 17 weeks then yes you are tied to it because you signed a legal document.

If you didn't sign anything then no you're not.

Having worked as a temp myself, I think you'll find that your contract says either of the following:

- That you have a one week notice period

- That you can leave with no notice but they ask that you give "as much notice as possible"

If you break your contract, the employer won't do anything because temps do this kind of thing all the time. But it's unprofessional and it's best not to burn bridges.

All employment contracts, whether permanent or temporary, are subject to that specific contract of employment. In your case, your contract of employment should state how much notice you need to give to terminate your contract.

It depends on the state really, and they type of work you do.

I'd check with an attorney.

Yep. You can leave when you want. It's not a law that you have to stay.
