I really wouldn't worry to much about it. Ivory, as long as it's not too yellowy, should be JUST FINE. The people who will be reading your resume probably won't know anything more about the proper color than you do.

Actually what's more important is the weight of the paper. When you're shuffling through a stack of resumes, a resume printed on heavy paper stands out very well. Look for paper with a weight of 24 lbs. and at least 25% cotton fiber. And if the paper has a watermark, that’s a plus, as it looks to be of higher quality. Just make sure it’s right side up when you print on the paper.

But don't worry about the color too much. Anyway, using exactly what everyone else uses might not be the best idea, right?

why not use black....its an awesome colour...I did my "throne room" in an egyptian style and use a black shower curtain...and accents...Of course the other colour is a dark sand so maybe that would work well with your black and white the colour sand) Have fun..the bathroom should be the most amusing room in your house!! We sure spend alot of time in there.

I bought some linen ivory resume paper today and I thought that was good, but now everyone is saying that white is more crisp and professional. Which is better and more professional: white or ivory?

I am an HR Manager. I put ads in the paper or on-line for four positions. I get 50 resumes in the mail on Tuesday, 100 on Wednesday, and continue to receive more resumes on Thursday and Friday. I have to review them all and forward them to the appropriate manager for further review. I am not going to pay any attention to the color of the paper. I am going to read it to see if the candidate has the necessary skills and experience to do the job. Think about the time it takes to do that.

I will note spelling and grammar and neatness. I will not like the resumes that are too creative in format or sent on odd size paper because that resume will be harder to read and/or not fit in my files without creative folding.

Therefore, it is most important that the resume or the cover letter answers the ad and describes the desired skills or experience.

Also, please don't tell me that you will call to set up an interview. Now, I am going to get hundreds of phone calls! I will call you if I want to set up an interview.

Besides setting all margins to 1", the most important criteria for setting up a professional resume besides relevant text, is "scanability." Here are some helpful tips:

1. Place just below your identification header [your hame, address, phone, email address] any Conditional Warning Statement such as "Confidential Resume,"Do Not Contact Current Employer," etc.

2. Always fill-in an Objectives category [just below the Conditional Warning Statement] and make sure that he Objective will contribute to the profitability of your future employer;

3. Select a mono-type font such as Helvetica, Arial, Courier or Times Roman; do not select any cursive handwriting styles which cannot scanned;

4. Type on plain white paper [no off-white shades or colorful non-white surfaces] and avoid heavy weight paper since it can often jam in scanners;

5. Keep font sizes within a range of 10 to 12 pts.;

6. Avoid styling text with a justified alignment, keep it flushed left;

7. Instead of using tabs to set up blocked text entries, generate a table and use the column and row settings accordingly;

8. Do not place an i.d. picture anywhere on the resume, this is a major taboo due to discrimination issues;

9. Do not place any graphic text [saved as .gifs] onto the resume since it may be overlooked during the scanning phase;

10. List at the very end of the resume your interests which should include travel experiences, language skills, social interactions such as golf, team sports, tennis, etc.

In conclusion, the above helpful hints were designed to allow ease of scanning of your resume into PDF which can then be text captured for seach purposes by your potential employer. If the original resume was created in Word, WordPerfect or Mac Appleworks, it can be Saved As a PDF file which then can be saved as an email attachment. Otherwise, you can simply use a scanner and scan a hard copy of the resume and then save as a PDF file.

Failure to conform the resume to appropriate fonts and styles as outlined above will result in rejection of the resume simply due to the inability of the scanning device to properly index relevant resume entries.

Good luck!

It depends on the job you're going for and the company you're applying to.

If it's anything to do with design or creativity, they will be looking for anything that stands out, including a different paper type, or nice (but legible) font.

But if you're applying for a clerical or office job, stick to good quality white.

I went to a resume class a few years ago and the people conducting the class gave out the off-white paper for us to print our resumes on. It was very nice paper and I still have some of it if I need it. Unless things have changed, I think you're okay.

And just for the record, I work in manufacturing/printing field.

Unless you are applying to work in a hair salon or beauty parlor, I would stick with the advice they gave you and use the white-colored paper.

all those colors are fine. I would just use white though. You want it as professional as possible.
