Well first let me explain something about accounting courses in college. If you college has a good accounting program then the courses are going to be brutal. They require alot of study time and not much of a life. Also, if you choose to be a CPA, I would advise you to do that right after college and before you decide to have children. Because, just like the accounting courses, studying for the CPA exam requires a lot of time and no life.
In most states you would need 150 college credits and/or some audit experience before you can become a CPA. Most entry level audit positions require 40+ hour work weeks and travel. Most CPAs work 60 to 80 hours a week. It is only after the first 2 to 3 years of this are you able to go out on your own and set your own hours. Even then you would need to have done some networking to build your client base.
The corporate accounting side can get brutal at times as well. Corporate accountants may work regular schedules during non peak times. However most month-end and year end closings require alot of overtime.
If you are only going to do something like accounts payable, then you dont need a full bachelors in accounting for that. An associates in accounting will suffice. Accounts payable jobs can be part time.
If I were you I would also take a look at the other business degrees such as finance, economics, and management. Those careers may provide more flexibility as far as hours are concerned.
Last but not least, if you are going to start your own business, you do not need an accounting degree for that. You just need a passion for what your doing and the guts to go out and do it.
Good luck
