Well first let me explain something about accounting courses in college. If you college has a good accounting program then the courses are going to be brutal. They require alot of study time and not much of a life. Also, if you choose to be a CPA, I would advise you to do that right after college and before you decide to have children. Because, just like the accounting courses, studying for the CPA exam requires a lot of time and no life.

In most states you would need 150 college credits and/or some audit experience before you can become a CPA. Most entry level audit positions require 40+ hour work weeks and travel. Most CPAs work 60 to 80 hours a week. It is only after the first 2 to 3 years of this are you able to go out on your own and set your own hours. Even then you would need to have done some networking to build your client base.

The corporate accounting side can get brutal at times as well. Corporate accountants may work regular schedules during non peak times. However most month-end and year end closings require alot of overtime.

If you are only going to do something like accounts payable, then you dont need a full bachelors in accounting for that. An associates in accounting will suffice. Accounts payable jobs can be part time.

If I were you I would also take a look at the other business degrees such as finance, economics, and management. Those careers may provide more flexibility as far as hours are concerned.

Last but not least, if you are going to start your own business, you do not need an accounting degree for that. You just need a passion for what your doing and the guts to go out and do it.

Good luck

That field has been in high demand for the last 20 years. Go for it, the pay is good and you can surely get part time work. If you later than to make the big bucks, become a CPA .

I am in the accounting feild. (Insurance accounting) and i would say no way. At least not were I work. We put in tons of OT and I work 40 hour weeks.

My wife is a Speech Language Pathologist, you would need to get a masters, but the hours are great and so is the pay. She does private sessions and only works a couple days a week, and she almost makes more than me.

it's really not feasable to be in accounting part time, especially if you're going to be doing anything tax related! my mom worked for a CPA firm and i basically didn't see her until taxes were done!

i also currently do payables and some receivables and it's full time! there always is an invoice to be book, paid or billed for! maybe if you worked for a smaller mom and pop type place but larger firms or business will need someone full time.

With any professional degree (i.e. CPA) you will have more freedom to set your own rules and hours. Accounting would definitely be an excellent field for this -- you have many options, especially if you go as far as CPA. It seems this is where your talent lies and also your passion. It would enable to secure yourself as a mom financially and it definitely would give you more freedom. You could definitely make money part time. Go for it! And GOOD LUCK!!

Start a tax service that you can operate out of your home. In most all states you dont have to meet any certain qualifications in order to prepare taxes. Have a pick up service that you pick up and drop off their tax papers (great with seniors and busy folks) and charge an affordable price and you can make a years worth of money between January and April. I try to target fast food workers and retail workers. They oftentimes have the easiest taxes to prepare and they pay places like H&R Block or Liberty Tax Service $100 to 200 for easy taxes because they want their money now. Convince them that if YOU prepare their taxes for them and file electronic returns - they will get their money in less than 2 weeks and you only charge $50 or $75. This worked well for me. Just stay outta my neighborhood LOL. Good Luck. (you can prepare while you watch your youngins and can work when you have to - espcially when their in bed)

You should concentrate on your career first. There are many women who fall into your situation and things happen and just having a part-time job won't be enough. Get your accounting degree first - even if it's only an associate degree. You won't get a good job if you don't have a degree. If you're good with numbers, you could try computer work too. More flexibility in that field.

Accounting is a great choice for your life-style. I'm a junior accountant & I have a very flexible work week I work from 20-40 hours. My hours are also great (6:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.) It also depends on the company you would be working for but a lot of accounting work has flexible hours & great pay! Congratulations & good luck!
